RE - WE ARE THEOLOGIANS...

Religious Education Curriculum Overview

Religious Education is an integral part of a child’s education at Middleton Parish Church School. In our teaching of R.E., we are always striving for excellence, reflecting the school’s distinctive Christian character.

The R.E. curriculum at Middleton Parish Church School aims to encourage pupils to achieve the Mission Statement of ‘Excellence, Truth and Grace’ in all aspects of their spiritual, moral and cultural development. Pupils are also given opportunities to reflect on and affirm the beliefs and values that are important to them, the community and the world in which we live.

Across both key stages R.E. activities seek to develop pupil knowledge and understanding of a number of world religions, and the ability to appreciate those commonly practiced in Great Britain. As they explore issues within and across faiths, our pupils learn to understand and respect different religions, beliefs, values and traditions and understand their influence on individuals, societies and communities.

To fulfil our aims and objectives our R.E. Curriculum follows the Manchester Diocesan syllabus for Religious Education.

The programme maintains a balanced approach between, Learning about Religion (Attainment Target 1) and Learning from Religion (Attainment Target 2).

In EYFS and KS1 we embed Bible stories, including personal reflections and thoughts, and introduce our children to other major religions.

Moving into KS2, the curriculum focuses on many areas in Christianity and other major religions. We complete topics on: Christian beliefs and values, The Bible, The character of God, The life of Jesus, Christian Festivals, Worship, Christian charity and Christian Living. We also spend time in each year group learning about Judaism and Islam.

Every class in school has a weekly R.E. lesson which includes both class and individual reflection. This provides all children with the opportunity to follow a personal journey of faith and to develop values and moral standards.
